- Statement
- Dataset Source: SMES may be considered a data management and distribution system for spatial information regarding ground marks. The original construction and production of the SMES database drew from various sources, including the first geodetic survey control network undertaken in the late 1800s, and the integration of surveys with neighbouring states to form the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966. The first version of the SMES database was established in the mid-1990s. Dataset Originality: Derived

Attribute Quality
- Comments
- Information regarding the physical status of the marks (Status, Marker_post_exists, cover_exists, mark_type, gnss_suitability and ground_to_mark_offset) have generally been submitted by external users. OSGV cannot confirm the accuracy of these records.
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- This dataset includes information obtained by agreement from a range of Government agencies including Land Use Victoria, Melbourne Water Corporation, Gas & Fuel, State Electricity Commission, Rural Water Commission and VicRoads. Many of these agencies have now been disaggregated or privatised. Hence, access to the original field data for quality verification is problematic. Consequently, these compiled data varies in accuracy from very high order through to coordinates digitised or scaled from maps.
